Mount Meru is the second-highest mountain in Tanzania and a perfect choice for hikers looking for a shorter, scenic, and less crowded climb. The route passes through Arusha National Park, offering a mix of wildlife, waterfalls, amazing views of Momella Lakes, and a spectacular ridge walk to the summit. This 3-day Mount Meru hike is ideal for adventure travelers, first-time high-altitude trekkers, and those preparing for Kilimanjaro. The trail is well maintained, supported by armed rangers, and the hike includes comfortable hut accommodation at night. With its dramatic landscapes and sunrise summit, Mount Meru is one of Tanzania’s best short treks.
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be greeted by your guide and transferred to your accommodation in Arusha or Moshi. Take the rest of the day to relax, settle in, and prepare for your upcoming adventure in Tanzania. Your journey into the heart of this incredible destination is about to begin!
The trek begins with a morning drive from Arusha to Momella Gate for registration. An armed ranger joins the group, and the hike starts through forest and grassy clearings where you may see giraffes, buffalo, zebras, and monkeys. The trail climbs gradually with beautiful views of waterfalls and the Meru crater. After a few hours, you reach Miriakamba Hut, where you settle in, enjoy dinner, relax, and admire the views of the surrounding valleys.
After breakfast, the trail becomes steeper as you climb through forest and moorland toward the saddle between Little Meru and the main peak. Along the way, you enjoy views of the crater walls and Kilimanjaro in the distance. On arrival at Saddle Hut, lunch is served and you take a short rest. In the late afternoon, you hike up to the summit of Little Meru for acclimatization and sunset photos before returning to the hut for dinner and an early sleep to prepare for the summit push.
The summit climb begins around midnight with a slow walk to Rhino Point and then along the dramatic ridge to the top of Mount Meru. The final approach is challenging but rewarding, and sunrise from Socialist Peak offers unforgettable views of Kilimanjaro and the crater. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend back to Saddle Hut for breakfast and rest. The journey continues down to Miriakamba Hut and then back to Momella Gate, where you receive your climbing certificate and drive back to Arusha.
