The Great Migration
Every year, 1.5 million wildebeest, 300,000 zebras, and 300,000 Thomson gazelles move in a circular pattern across the Serengeti ecosystem. The migration follows the rains and fresh grass.
Best Time to Visit
- January-March: Calving season in southern Serengeti. 8,000 wildebeest born daily.
- April-May: Herds move northwest. Long rains.
- June-July: River crossings at Grumeti River. Dramatic scenes.
- August-October: Mara River crossings. Most dramatic moments.
- November-December: Herds return south. Short rains.
Where to Stay
- Central Serengeti: Best year-round. Good access to migration.
- Western Serengeti: Grumeti River crossings.
- Northern Serengeti: Mara River crossings. Remote and exclusive.
