Understanding Tanzanian Currency
The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). Since March 2025, Tanzania operates on a TZS-only cash policy — US dollars are no longer widely accepted for payments. Here is how to manage your money.
Exchange Rates
- 1 USD ≈ 2,500 TZS (approximate, varies daily)
- Euros and British Pounds are also accepted at bureaux de change
- US dollar bills printed before 2009 are often rejected — they must be post-2009
Where to Exchange
- Banks — Best rates, but slower (Mon-Fri 8:30-16:00)
- Bureaux de Change — Faster, competitive rates
- Airport — Convenient but lower rates
- Hotels — Most convenient but worst rates
ATMs
ATMs are available in major cities (Arusha, Moshi, Dar es Salaam). Most dispense TZS and accept international cards. Withdrawal limits: 400,000-600,000 TZS per transaction.
Credit and Debit Cards
Visa and Mastercard are accepted at larger hotels and lodges. Expect a 3.5% transaction fee on card payments. Smaller establishments and safari camps often require cash. American Express is rarely accepted.

- Luxury safari: -1,500+ per person per day
Tipping Guidelines
- Safari guide: -30 per day
- Cook: -15 per day
- Porters: -15 per day (Kilimanjaro)
- Restaurant: 10% of bill
