Detailed guide to Kilimanjaro climb duration β€” route-by-route breakdown, acclimatization, and why longer routes have higher success rates.

How Long Does It Take to Climb Kilimanjaro?

The average Kilimanjaro climb takes 5 to 9 days depending on the route you choose. The extra days are crucial for acclimatization and dramatically increase your chances of reaching the summit.

Route-by-Route Duration

  • Machame Route: 5-7 days. Most popular route. 5 days has 65% success rate, 7 days has 85%.
  • Marangu Route: 5-6 days. The "Coca-Cola" route. 5 days has 60% success rate, 6 days has 75%.
  • Lemosho Route: 6-8 days. Excellent acclimatization. 8 days has 95% success rate.
  • Rongai Route: 6-7 days. Drier route from the north. 7 days has 85% success rate.
  • Northern Circuit: 9 days. Longest route. 95% success rate.

Why Longer Is Better

The number one reason people fail to summit is altitude sickness. Longer routes allow for better acclimatization. On a 5-day trek, you only have one day to adjust. On a 7-day trek, you have three days of acclimatization.

Day-by-Day Example (Machame 7 Days)

  • Day 1: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (3,000m) β€” 5-6 hours
  • Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,840m) β€” 5-6 hours
  • Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp (3,960m) β€” 5-6 hours. Acclimatization day.
  • Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (4,035m) β€” 4-5 hours
  • Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m) β€” 4-5 hours
  • Day 6: Summit attempt. Barafu to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,100m) β€” 10-14 hours
  • Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640m) β€” 3-4 hours

Summit Night

Summit night is the most challenging part. You leave camp around midnight and climb through the night. The temperature drops to -20Β°C. The air is thin. It takes 6-8 hours to reach the summit and another 4-6 hours to descend.

Success Rates by Duration

  • 5 days: 60-65%
  • 6 days: 75-80%
  • 7 days: 85-90%
  • 8-9 days: 95%+

Recommendation

For the best chance of success, choose a 7 or 8-day route. The extra investment in time dramatically increases your chances of standing on the Roof of Africa.
