The park is small but remarkably diverse, encompassing the Ngurdo Crater, lush montane forests, and the serene Momella Lakes. Walk through the forest with an armed ranger, spotting black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and the beautiful Hartlaub's turaco. The game drive takes you to the lakes, where thousands of lesser flamingos create a pink haze across the water's surface. The afternoon game drive takes you along the Tarangire River, where huge herds of elephants gather to drink and bathe in the shallows. The park supports an incredible diversity of wildlife including lions, leopards, cheetahs, and the rare fringe-eared oryx. Birdlife is spectacular, with yellow-collared lovebirds, rufous-tailed weavers, and ashy starlings found nowhere else in Tanzania. The Tarangire River attracts elephants in enormous numbers, and it is not uncommon to see herds of over a hundred elephants moving together across the landscape. After lunch at camp, head out again for an afternoon drive through the swamps, where huge numbers of wildebeest, zebra, and oryx gather during the dry season.
