About the Migration
What is the Great Migration?
The Great Migration is the largest terrestrial wildlife movement on Earth. Every year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and countless gazelles circle through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water.
This circular journey covers approximately 800 kilometers and is driven by rainfall patterns. The migration is not a single event but a continuous cycle, with different phases offering unique wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the year.
As part of this journey, the herds face dramatic river crossings at the Grumeti and Mara rivers, where crocodiles wait and predators lurk — creating some of the most intense wildlife spectacles on the planet.
