Itinerary

Day 1

Dar es Salaam to Mikumi National Park

Depart Dar es Salaam early morning and drive approximately four hours west to Mikumi National Park, one of Tanzania's most accessible wildlife reserves. The drive takes you through the scenic Uluguru Mountains and rural Tanzania, passing sisal plantations and small villages. Arrive in the early afternoon and head straight into the park for your first game drive, searching for elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and the park's large populations of buffalo and wildebeest. The Mkata Floodplain, often compared to the Serengeti, provides excellent game viewing with open grasslands and scattered acacia trees. As the afternoon light softens, watch elephants drinking at waterholes and lions resting in the shade. Return to your mid-range lodge for a delicious dinner and overnight stay, with the sounds of the African bush as your soundtrack.

Day 2

Mikumi Game Drive and Return to Dar es Salaam

Rise before dawn for an early morning game drive in Mikumi, when predators are most active and the light is magical for photography. The morning drive focuses on the Mkata Floodplain, where herds of elephants, giraffes, and zebras graze in the golden morning light. Look for lions on the hunt, leopards in the sausage trees, and the park's impressive birdlife including martial eagles, lilac-breasted rollers, and the enormous ground hornbill. Return to the lodge for a full breakfast and check out before beginning the drive back to Dar es Salaam. Arrive in the late afternoon with the rest of the evening at your leisure, reflecting on two days of incredible wildlife encounters in one of Tanzania's hidden gems.
