6 Day Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

Tour Overview

The 7-day Lemosho Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is a scenic trek that offers hikers a less crowded, more gradual ascent to the summit. Starting from the lush rainforest on the western side of the mountain, the route traverses diverse landscapes, including moorlands, alpine desert, and glaciated zones. It offers excellent acclimatization opportunities, making it one of the most successful routes for reaching the summit, Uhuru Peak, at 5,895 meters.

Day by Day

Arrival Date

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be greeted by your guide and transferred to your accommodation in Arusha or Moshi. Take the rest of the day to relax, settle in, and prepare for your upcoming adventure in Tanzania. Your journey into the heart of this incredible destination is about to begin!

After breakfast, you’ll drive to the Marangu Gate where your trek begins. You’ll pass through lush tropical rainforest, with chances to spot wildlife such as monkeys and colorful birds. The path is well-maintained, and the climb is gradual, giving you an opportunity to acclimatize. Mandara Hut, where you’ll spend the night, offers great views and basic facilities, including sleeping huts with beds and a dining area.

  • Trek Time: 4-5 hours

  • Altitude Gain: 830 meters

  • Distance: 8 km / 5 miles

Today’s hike takes you above the tree line, through alpine meadows, and into the moorland zone. You’ll encounter beautiful views of the mountain and surrounding areas. As you reach Horombo Hut, the higher altitude and cooler temperatures become more apparent. Horombo is a larger hut with a great view of both Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Mawenzi, providing a good spot for resting and acclimatizing.

  • Trek Time: 5-6 hours

  • Altitude Gain: 1,020 meters

  • Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles

You’ll spend the day at Horombo Hut, which is situated at 3,720 meters (12,205 feet). This is a crucial acclimatization day, giving your body time to adjust to the higher altitude before the next leg of your climb. An important part of this day is the acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks, located at approximately 4,200 meters (13,780 feet). This hike allows you to climb higher during the day and then descend back to Horombo Hut to sleep, which is a key technique for acclimatizing safely.

Today’s trek takes you into the alpine desert zone, where vegetation becomes sparse and the landscape becomes harsher. You’ll notice the thin air as you approach Kibo Hut, located at 4,700 meters. The hike to Kibo is long and sometimes challenging, but it’s a steady ascent. Kibo Hut is the base for the final summit push. After arrival, take time to rest and hydrate in preparation for the summit.

  • Trek Time: 5-6 hours

  • Altitude Gain: 980 meters

  • Distance: 10 km / 6 miles

Summit Day starts very early (around midnight) with a climb to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. The first part of the climb is steep and difficult, but you’ll be rewarded with stunning views as you ascend through the night. You’ll pass Gilman’s Point at around 5,681 meters, and from there, it’s a final push to the summit. Once you reach Uhuru Peak, you’ll have time to celebrate and take photos before beginning the descent. The descent is quicker but still requires focus, as you make your way back to Horombo Hut for rest.

  • Trek Time: 11-14 hours (Summit Day)

  • Altitude Gain: 1,195 meters to summit, then descend 2,175 meters

On the final day, you’ll descend from Horombo Hut back to Marangu Gate. The descent takes you through lush forests once again. Once you reach the gate, you’ll complete your climb by signing out and receiving your certificate (depending on whether you reached Gilman’s Point or Uhuru Peak). Afterward, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-deserved rest and celebration.

  • Trek Time: 5-6 hours

  • Altitude Loss: 1,850 meters

  • Distance: 20 km / 12.5 miles
