Day 2

Moshi – Lemosho Gate (2,100m) – Big Tree Camp (2,650m)

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins! After an early breakfast at your hotel in Moshi, you'll be picked up at 8:00 AM and driven to Lemosho Gate on the western side of the mountain — approximately a 2-hour scenic drive through lush countryside. At the gate, your guides and porters will complete registration and you'll receive a brief orientation. The trek starts through the magnificent Lemosho Glade, a dense tropical rainforest filled with giant trees, ferns, and mosses. Keep your eyes peeled for black-and-white colobus monkeys leaping through the canopy, colorful turacos, and other forest birds. The trail is well-maintained and the gradient is gentle, making it a perfect warm-up day. After approximately 4 hours of hiking, you'll arrive at Big Tree Camp (also known as Mkubwa Camp), situated in a clearing surrounded by ancient trees. Settle into your tent, enjoy a hot dinner prepared by your mountain cook, and rest well — tomorrow is a long day crossing the Shira Plateau.

Day 3

Big Tree Camp (2,650m) – Shira 2 Camp (3,850m)

This is the longest day of the trek, but also one of the most spectacular. After an early breakfast, you'll leave the forest zone behind and emerge onto the expansive Shira Plateau — one of the highest plateaus in the world. The landscape transforms dramatically: dense rainforest gives way to open heath and moorland, with giant groundsel and lobelia plants dotting the terrain like something from a prehistoric era. You'll first reach Shira Camp 1, where you'll take a short break and enjoy panoramic views of Kilimanjaro's Kibo Peak emerging through the clouds. After resting, you'll continue across the plateau towards Shira Camp 2. The terrain is relatively flat but the altitude makes it challenging. As you approach camp, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the giant glaciers on the northern glaciers of Kilimanjaro and the dramatic peaks of Mawenzi. Shira 2 Camp is beautifully situated with stunning sunset views. Take your time to acclimatize, hydrate well, and enjoy the extraordinary scenery surrounding you.

Day 4

Shira 2 Camp (3,850m) – Lava Tower (4,630m) – Barranco Camp (3,900m)

Today is a critical acclimatization day that follows the "climb high, sleep low" principle — one of the most important techniques for a successful summit. After breakfast, you'll trek eastward across the high-altitude desert landscape towards the imposing Lava Tower (4,630m / 15,190ft), a massive volcanic rock formation that stands like a sentinel on the mountain. The trek to the tower takes approximately 3-4 hours and the terrain becomes increasingly rocky and barren as you ascend. When you reach the Lava Tower, you'll be rewarded with jaw-dropping 360° views: Kibo's glaciers to the south, Mawenzi's jagged peaks to the east, and the vast plains of Tanzania stretching endlessly below. Enjoy a well-earned lunch at this altitude before beginning the dramatic descent into the Barranco Valley. The descent is steep at first, winding down through alpine desert terrain before entering the sheltered Barranco Valley. As you approach Barranco Camp, you'll see the infamous Barranco Wall looming ahead — tomorrow's great challenge. This day's climb to 4,630m and descent to 3,900m is essential for acclimatizing your body to the altitude, and significantly increases your chances of reaching the summit.

Day 5

Barranco Camp (3,900m) – Karanga Camp (3,995m)

Today's highlight is the legendary Barranco Wall — a 257-meter (843-foot) steep rock scramble that looks intimidating from below but is an exhilarating and achievable challenge. After an early breakfast, you'll join other climbers at the base of the wall. The climb is a hands-on scramble using ropes and natural handholds — no technical climbing skills are needed, just a sense of adventure and sure-footedness. Your guides will assist you every step of the way. As you ascend, look back for incredible views of Barranco Camp below and the glaciers above. Once you conquer the wall, you'll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Kibo's southern glaciers and the jagged peak of Mawenzi. From the top of the wall, the trail descends through beautiful alpine terrain, passing beneath enormous glaciers and across rocky ridges. You'll trek through the Karanga Valley — the last water source before the summit — before arriving at Karanga Camp. This camp offers spectacular views of the sunset over Mawenzi and is the perfect place to rest before the final push to Barafu Camp tomorrow.

Day 6

Karanga Camp (3,995m) – Barafu Camp (4,673m)

The final stretch before your summit attempt! After breakfast, you'll trek through stark, beautiful alpine desert terrain towards Barafu Camp (4,673m / 15,331ft) — the base camp for the summit push. The landscape is otherworldly: barren, rocky, and dramatic, with giant glaciers towering above and Mawenzi's jagged spires piercing the sky. As you climb higher, the air becomes noticeably thinner and each step requires more effort. This is normal — listen to your body, stay hydrated, and keep a steady pace. When you arrive at Barafu Camp, you'll have lunch and then spend the rest of the afternoon resting in your tent. This rest is absolutely critical — you'll be waking up at midnight for the summit attempt. Your guides will brief you on the night ahead: what to wear, what to carry, and what to expect. Eat an early dinner (around 5:00 PM), try to sleep by 6:00-7:00 PM, and mentally prepare for the most challenging and rewarding day of your life. The views from Barafu Camp at sunset — with the sun setting behind Kibo and the glaciers glowing gold — are unforgettable.

Day 7

Barafu Camp (4,673m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Millennium Camp (3,950m)

The moment you've been training and trekking for — Summit Day! Your alarm rings at midnight. After a light breakfast of hot tea, coffee, and biscuits, you'll set off by headlamp into the freezing darkness. The first section is the steepest, climbing relentlessly up loose scree in a single-file line of climbers. The cold is intense (temperatures can drop to -15°C), so wear every layer you have. After approximately 4-5 hours of steady climbing, you'll reach Stella Point (5,756m / 18,885ft) on the crater rim — just in time to witness one of the most breathtaking sunrises you'll ever see, as the sun breaks over the plains of Kenya and Tanzania below. From Stella Point, it's approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft) — the highest point in Africa and the ultimate goal of your journey. When you reach the iconic sign at the summit, emotions run high: tears, cheers, and hugs as you celebrate this life-changing achievement. Take photos, soak in the 360° views of glaciers, clouds, and the African continent stretching below you, and savor every moment. The descent is quicker but still demanding — you'll head back down to Barafu Camp for a celebratory lunch and a short rest before continuing down to Millennium Camp (3,950m), where you'll spend the night exhausted but exhilarated.

Day 8

Millennium Camp (3,950m) – Mweka Gate (1,640m)

The final day! After a well-deserved sleep and celebratory breakfast, you'll begin your descent from Millennium Camp through lush montane forest. The trail winds downhill through beautiful green vegetation — a stark contrast to the barren alpine landscapes of the past few days. You'll pass through heath and moorland zones before entering the dense rainforest, where the air is warm and humid. Keep your eyes open for colobus monkeys and tropical birds as you make your way down. After approximately 5-6 hours of hiking, you'll arrive at Mweka Gate (1,640m), where you'll sign out and receive your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate — proof that you conquered Africa's highest peak! Your driver will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower, a cold drink, and a well-deserved celebration dinner with your guides and fellow climbers. This is the end of an incredible journey — one you'll remember for the rest of your life.
