Nyerere National Park, formerly known as the Selous Game Reserve, is the largest national park in Africa covering over 30,000 square kilometers. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it protects one of the continent's most significant wilderness areas.
The park is named after Julius Nyerere, Tanzania's founding father, and is home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife including large populations of elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, and the elusive African wild dog. The Rufiji River, one of East Africa's great waterways, winds through the park creating a network of channels, lakes, and floodplains that support incredible concentrations of wildlife.
Nyerere offers a unique combination of boat safaris along the Rufiji River and traditional game drives through vast miombo woodland and grasslands. The park remains relatively undeveloped compared to northern Tanzania parks, providing an authentic and adventurous safari experience.
Nyerere National Park is home to large populations of elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, and the endangered African wild dog. The Rufiji River supports one of the largest concentrations of hippos in Africa, while the vast plains harbor lions, leopards, and numerous antelope species.
